To Pimp A Butterfly admittedly was not an easy album to digest . Upon first hearing it I thought it spoke on similar messages from his previous works such as section 80 and Good Kid Mad City but in a much more direct and unfiltered manner. The more I listened to it the more I realized he didn't want to make it easy on us. It was supposed to be uncomfortable which as a credit to him pushed us forward when regarding what is a classic. Kendrick pulled out a mirror and forced us to look at what we are and through the good bad the warts and all we saw ourselves for what we really stand for. The current zeitgeist of civil rage and patriotism which are both one in the same , Kendrick accurately acknowledges it and tonight's performance did nothing but entrench him further as this generations truth, it's ombudsman , it's conscious . Kendrick is the honesty our culture has needed. Might not be easy to embrace but he's our medicine.
